The main thoroughfare through town, Republic Street, leads to It-Tokk Square (now officially known as Independence Square) with cafés and a daily morning market. At the west end of the square is the tourist information office, housed in a circular building dating from 1733, which was the Banco Guiratale. The old town, just off of It-Tokk, is a maze of narrow alleys where you can find women making lace in the shade of their doorways. There are also numerous craft and antique shops, and a special quarter for old metal kitchenware and other collectibles. Alongside It-Tokk is St George’s Square with the Basilica of St George. Built in the 1670s and badly damaged in the earthquake of 1693, it is richly decorated, with ceilings painted by the Italian artist Giovanni Battista Conti. The ornate wooden statue of the patron saint was carved in 1841. This is carried through the streets on the saint’s day (the third Sunday in July). A painting by Mattia Preti over the choir altar depicts the knight poised at the moment of his victory over the dragon. Also in the area is the Heart of Gozo Museum (www.heartofgozo.org.mt; Mon–Sun 9am–5pm; free), opened in 2013, which displays a rich collection of historical and artistic artefacts previously inaccessible to the general public.
